IEC 60794-2-50:2008 provides requirements for simplex and duplex optical fibre cables for use in terminated cable assemblies or for termination with optical fibre passive components. This standard cancels and replaces IEC/PAS 60794-2-50 published in 2004. This standard is to be used in conjunction with IEC 60794-1-1, IEC 60794-1-2 and IEC 60794-2.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60794-2-50:2008 details the family specification for indoor simplex and duplex optical fibre cables used in terminated cable assemblies. This international standard, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), establishes requirements for the design, construction, and performance of optical fibre cables used in indoor environments, particularly for applications where cables are terminated with connectors or optical fibre passive components. It replaces IEC/PAS 60794-2-50:2004 and must be used in conjunction with the IEC 60794-1-1, IEC 60794-1-2, and IEC 60794-2 standards.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Purpose
- Defines requirements for simplex and duplex optical fibre cables for use in terminated assemblies or with passive components.
- Ensures suitability for indoor environments and focuses on cables intended for patch cords and work area cords.
-
Construction Requirements
- Covers fibre types (single-mode and multimode), buffer and tube designs, strength and anti-buckling members, and sheath specifications.
- Emphasizes cable identification, sheath marking, and the absence of fibre splices over delivery lengths.
-
Performance Testing
- Mandates testing for dimensions, tensile strength, crush resistance, impact, bending, torsion, kink resistance, sheath pull-off force, and environmental durability.
- Includes specialized test methods for sheath shrinkage, temperature cycling, and movement under compression.
-
Health, Safety, and Marking
- Stipulates that materials used must not pose health hazards in their intended use.
- Sets guidelines for abrasion-resistant marking and clear identification throughout the cable’s length.
Applications
-
Telecommunications Infrastructure
- Used within buildings for structured cabling systems, such as those outlined in ISO/IEC 11801.
- Suitable for data centres, office networks, and equipment rooms requiring high-performance optical connectivity.
-
Patch Cords and Cable Assemblies
- Specifically designed for factory-terminated or field-terminated cable assemblies.
- Ensures ease of installation, connectorization, and reliable performance in patch panels, work area outlets, and equipment racks.
-
Passive Optical Components
- Intended for use with optical fibre splitters, couplers, and other passive devices in indoor networks.
- Guarantees mechanical and transmission performance when used with these components.
-
Reliable Network Performance
- Adopts rigorous test procedures to ensure consistent attenuation values and mechanical robustness.
- Supports long-term durability and fire safety, complying with relevant building and safety regulations.
