IEC 60811-603:2012 gives the test methods to examine the filling compound for corrosive elements. IEC 60811-603:2012 cancels and replaces Clause 7 of IEC 60811-5-1:1990, which is withdrawn. Full details of the replacements are shown in Annex A of IEC 60811-100:2012. There are no specific technical changes with respect to the previous edition, but see the Foreword to IEC 60811-100:2012. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60811-100:2012.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60811-603:2012 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the test methods for measuring the total acid number (TAN) of filling compounds used in electric and optical fibre cables. Part of the broader IEC 60811 series focusing on physical tests for non-metallic cable materials, this standard provides critical procedures to evaluate the presence of corrosive acidic elements in filling compounds. The measurement of TAN is essential to ensure cable durability and prevent degradation caused by acid-induced corrosion within cable structures.
This standard replaces Clause 7 of IEC 60811-5-1:1990, with no significant technical changes, and should be used alongside IEC 60811-100:2012, which covers general provisions for testing non-metallic materials in cables.
Key Topics
- Purpose: Defines test methods for determining the total acid number in filling compounds to detect corrosive substances that may compromise cable integrity.
- Total Acid Number (TAN): Represents the amount of potassium hydroxide (KOH) in milligrams required to neutralize acidic constituents in one gram of the sample.
- Scope: Applies to filling compounds within electric and optical fibre cables, critical for assessing durability and suitability.
- Test Methodology:
- Utilizes acid-base titration with a standardized alcoholic KOH solution.
- Employs the p-Naphtholbenzein indicator solution for detecting titration end points.
- Involves dissolving samples in a specific titration solvent mixture (toluene, water, anhydrous isopropyl alcohol).
- Equipment and Reagents:
- Analytical reagent quality chemicals.
- Standard alcoholic potassium hydroxide solution (0.1 N).
- p-Naphtholbenzein indicator prepared according to strict specifications (see Annex A).
- Burettes for precise volume measurement during titration.
- Calculation: TAN is calculated based on volume of KOH used, its normality, and sample weight.
- Reporting: In accordance with IEC 60811-100, ensuring consistency in documenting test outcomes.
Applications
The IEC 60811-603:2012 standard is widely used by manufacturers, testing laboratories, and quality assurance teams involved in the production and validation of electric and optical fibre cables. Its key applications include:
- Quality Control: Monitoring the chemical stability of filling compounds to ensure they do not contain harmful levels of acidic substances.
- Material Selection: Assisting in the selection of filling compounds that meet longevity and safety criteria for cable insulation and protection.
- Cable Manufacture: Verification of filling compounds used in various cable layers (insulation, bedding, sheathing) to prevent corrosion-induced failures.
- Research & Development: Supporting development of improved non-metallic filling materials with optimized corrosion resistance.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring compliance with international testing standards for cable materials internationally accepted in energy, communication, and industrial sectors.
Related Standards
- IEC 60811-100:2012: General provisions and definitions for testing non-metallic materials in cables, serving as a companion document detailing overarching procedures to be followed in conjunction with Part 603.
- IEC 60811 Series: Comprising various parts specifying test methods for non-metallic materials used in electric cables and optical fibre cables, including physical, mechanical, and chemical evaluation methods.
- ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2: Guidelines ensuring standardization and uniformity of developing international standards, referenced during IEC 60811-603 preparation.
Practical Value
Implementing the IEC 60811-603:2012 test method facilitates:
- Enhanced Cable Reliability: By detecting corrosive elements early, cable manufacturers can prevent premature cable failures stemming from acid degradation.
- Material Integrity Assurance: Supports routine testing to maintain the chemical quality of filling compounds.
- Optimized Cable Performance: Ensures that filling compounds maintain their protective, insulating, and mechanical properties over cable lifespan.
- International Harmonization: Provides a consistent testing approach aligned with globally accepted IEC standards, easing product acceptance in international markets.
This standard is essential for professionals engaged in cable manufacturing, testing laboratories ensuring safety and reliability, and engineering teams tasked with cable design and development, particularly in sectors such as power transmission, telecommunications, shipbuilding, and offshore applications.
