IEC 61753-022-02: 2026 defines the minimum initial test and measurement requirements and severities which multimode fibre optic connectors terminated as a pigtail or patchcord satisfy in order to be categorized as meeting the IEC standard category C (controlled environment), as defined in IEC 61753‑1. This first edition cancels and replaces the second edition of IEC 61753-022-2 published in 2012. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) addition of provisions for rectangular ferrule connectors; b) additions of terms and definitions; c) update of the fibre naming conventions in accordance with IEC 60793-2-10; d) update of test severities in accordance with IEC 61753‑1; e) addition of the torsion test; f) reduction of the duration of the fibre/cable retention test on reinforced cables from 120 s to 60 s minimum; g) deletion of the static side load test; h) update of the flexing of the strain relief test to use the change in attenuation instead of the transient loss; i) reduction of the number of mating durability cycles for cylindrical ferrule connectors from 500 cycles to 200 cycles; j) addition of the mating durability for rectangular ferrule connectors with 50 cycles; k) addition of Annex B for visual examination of the outer cable sheath movement of reinforced cables as an additional requirement for change of temperature, cable retention and flexing of the strain relief tests.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61753-022-02:2026 is an International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard that specifies performance requirements for multimode fibre optic connectors terminated as pigtails and patchcords, designed for use in category C (controlled environment) applications. The standard outlines the minimum initial test and measurement requirements, including test severities, that these connectors must meet to be classified as compliant under IEC 61753-1.
This first edition supersedes and technically revises IEC 61753-022-2:2012, incorporating substantial updates such as provisions for rectangular ferrule connectors, expanded definitions, revised test criteria, and new requirements for both performance and visual examination. The document enhances reliability and consistency in the use of multimode fibre optic connectors within data centers, telecommunications, LANs, and other controlled environments where stable network performance is critical.
Key Topics
- Performance Requirements: Defines initial and post-test criteria for attenuation, return loss, and physical integrity, aligning with IEC 61753-1 and related connector interface standards.
- Connector Types: Coverage includes both cylindrical and rectangular ferrule multimode connectors, with explicit sample preparation, marking, and examination procedures.
- Testing Procedures: Encompasses a comprehensive range of environmental and mechanical tests, such as:
- Vibration
- Mating durability
- Fibre/cable retention
- Tensile strength of coupling mechanisms
- Impact resistance
- Flexing of the strain relief
- Torsion
- Exposure to cold, dry heat, damp heat, and temperature cycling
- Visual Inspection: Strict visual criteria for connector endface quality and outer cable sheath movement (for reinforced cables), ensuring long-term functionality and physical integrity.
- Sample Size and Sequencing: Detailed requirements for sample selection and test order to ensure representative and robust qualification processes.
- Reporting: Mandates thorough test documentation for compliance verification and quality assurance.
Applications
The IEC 61753-022-02:2026 standard delivers practical value across multiple sectors using optical fibre connectivity, specifically:
- Data Centers: Ensures reliability of patchcords and pigtails for backbone and structured cabling, minimizing signal loss and network downtime.
- Enterprise and Campus Networks: Guarantees high-performance connections in LANs, ensuring compliance with global best practices for multimode fibre links.
- Telecommunications: Facilitates deployment of robust, high-density optical networks in exchanges, central offices, and customer premises under controlled conditions.
- Laboratory and Manufacturing: Supports qualification and factory acceptance testing of multimode fibre patchcords and pigtails for product release.
- Certification and Quality Assurance: Provides a universal benchmark for conformity assessment, supplier evaluation, and ongoing quality audits in fibre optic manufacturing.
By adhering to EMC, mechanical durability, and optical performance benchmarks, organizations can improve network longevity, enhance performance, and reduce total cost of ownership.
Related Standards
Implementing IEC 61753-022-02:2026 harmonizes with a range of international IEC standards, including:
- IEC 61753-1: General requirements for fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components - category definitions and guidance.
- IEC 61754 Series: Connector interface standards for various connector types (e.g., SC, LC).
- IEC 61300 Series: Basic test and measurement procedures for interconnecting devices, covering vibration, mating durability, retention, tensile strength, flexing, torsion, and environmental exposures.
- IEC 60793-2-10: Multimode optical fibre product specification.
- IEC 60794-2-23 / IEC 60794-2-50: Specifications for indoor fibre optic cables used in terminated assemblies.
- IEC 63267 Series: Fibre optic connector optical interfaces for enhanced macro bend loss multimode fibres.
For optimal interoperability and product reliability in fibre optic networks, organizations should integrate IEC 61753-022-02:2026 with these related standards. This fosters a standardized approach to testing, quality, and long-term system performance in controlled environment optical fibre applications.
