IEC 60794-2-50: 2020 specifies requirements for simplex and duplex optical fibre cables for use in terminated cable assemblies or for termination with optical fibre passive components. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2008. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: update of the normative references; review and update of parameters and requirements for mechanical tests and environmental tests; Annex B has been removed and test method for sheath pull-off force evaluation refers to IEC 60794-1-21, method E21; Annex C has been removed and test method for sheath shrinkage evaluation refers to IEC 60794-1-22, method F11; Annex D has been removed and test method for buffered fibre movement under compression refers to IEC 60794-1-21, method E22; Annex E has been removed and test method for temperature cycling evaluation refers to IEC 60794-1-22, method F12; fibre type designations have been updated and the new wideband MM fibre is included as an option. Keywords: requirements for simplex and duplex optical fibre cables
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60794-2-50:2020 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies requirements for simplex and duplex indoor optical fibre cables. Specifically designed for use in terminated cable assemblies or for termination with optical fibre passive components, this standard ensures that these cables meet stringent mechanical, environmental, and transmission performance criteria.
This second edition updates the first edition from 2008 by revising normative references, enhancing mechanical and environmental testing parameters, and including a new wideband multimode (MM) fibre as an option. The standard is essential for manufacturers, designers, and installers focused on high-quality indoor optical fibre cabling solutions.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application
Focuses on simplex and duplex optical fibre cables within indoor environments particularly used in pre-terminated cable assemblies. -
Construction Requirements
Specifies detailed guidelines for optical fibres, primary coatings, buffers, tubes, strength members, anti-buckling materials, and sheath marking to ensure consistent cable quality and reliability. -
Mechanical Tests
Includes tensile performance, crushing resistance, impact resistance, repeated bending, torsion, bending at low temperature, kinking, abrasion resistance, and sheath pull-off force – essential to guarantee cable robustness in practical use. -
Environmental Tests
Defines temperature cycling tests and references to standardized evaluation methods ensuring cable performance across varying indoor temperature ranges. -
Transmission and Fire Performance
Addresses minimum optical transmission performance and safety requirements for fire behavior, vital for indoor applications aligning with building codes and safety regulations. -
Updated Test Method References
This edition removes several annexes and delegates specific test methods to related IEC standards for clarity and harmonization:- Sheath pull-off force evaluation (IEC 60794-1-21, method E21)
- Sheath shrinkage evaluation (IEC 60794-1-22, method F11)
- Buffered fibre movement under compression (IEC 60794-1-21, method E22)
- Temperature cycling evaluation (IEC 60794-1-22, method F12)
-
Fibre Type Designations
Updated fibre specifications include introduction of wideband MM fibre, enhancing compatibility with modern indoor network infrastructure.
Applications
IEC 60794-2-50:2020 is primarily applied in:
-
Indoor Optical Fibre Networks
Perfect for residential, commercial, and data center environments where simplex or duplex cables are used in terminated assemblies such as patch cords and jumper cables. -
Terminated Cable Assemblies
Ensures cables used in factory-terminated or field-terminated assemblies meet stringent performance and durability requirements. -
Telecommunication and Data Transmission
Supports high-speed communication within buildings, enabling reliable optical fibre links essential for internet, intranet, and multimedia services. -
Passive Optical Network (PON) Components
Suitable for optical fibre cables attached to passive components like splitters and connectors inside indoor environments.
