IEC 61788-12:2013 describes a test method for determining the copper to non-copper volume ratio of Cu/Nb3Sn wires. The test method given hereunder is applicable to Nb3Sn composite superconducting wires with a cross-sectional area of 0,1 mm2 to 3,0 mm2 and a copper to non-copper volume ratio of 0,1 or more. It does not make any reference to the filament diameter; however, it is not applicable to those superconducting wires with their filament, Sn, Cu-Sn alloy, barrier material and other non-copper portions dispersed in the copper matrix or those with the stabilizer dispersed. Furthermore, the copper to non-copper volume ratio can be determined on specimens before or after the Nb3Sn formation heat treatment process. The Cu/Nb3Sn wire has a monolithic structure with a round or rectangular cross-section. Though uncertainty increases, this method may be applicable to the measurement of the copper to non-copper volume ratio of the Cu/Nb3Sn wires whose cross-section and copper to non-copper volume ratio fall outside the specified ranges. This test method may be applied to other composite superconducting wires after some appropriate modifications. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2002. It constitutes a technical revision. The main revision is the addition of two new annexes, "Uncertainty considerations" and "Uncertainty evaluation in the test method of the copper to non-copper volume ratio of Nb3Sn composite superconducting wires".
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61788-12:2013 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies a precise test method for measuring the copper to non-copper volume ratio in Nb₃Sn composite superconducting wires, commonly referred to as Cu/Nb₃Sn wires. This ratio is a critical parameter influencing the electrical stability and critical current density of superconducting wires widely used in advanced electrical applications.
The standard applies to Nb₃Sn composite wires having a cross-sectional area between 0.1 mm² and 3.0 mm² with a copper to non-copper volume ratio of at least 0.1. It encompasses wires with round or rectangular monolithic cross-sections and provides guidelines for measurement both before and after the Nb₃Sn formation heat treatment process.
IEC 61788-12:2013 advances the first edition (2002) by adding comprehensive annexes on uncertainty considerations and evaluations, thereby improving test reliability and accuracy. This makes it an indispensable reference for manufacturers, quality control laboratories, and researchers working with superconducting wire technologies.
Key Topics
-
Test Scope & Applicability
The method is intended specifically for Cu/Nb₃Sn wires that do not contain dispersed filaments, Sn, Cu-Sn alloys, or stabilizers within the copper matrix. Though optimized for a defined cross-section and volume ratio range, it can be adapted with caution for wires outside these parameters. -
Measurement Techniques
Three main techniques for measuring copper to non-copper volume ratios are detailed:- Paper Mass Method: Primary method using photomicrograph tracing and mass measurement of paper cutouts to determine area ratios.
- Image Processing Method: Digital analysis of cross-section images to calculate volume ratios via software (Annex A).
- Copper Mass Method: Chemical dissolution of copper to directly weigh non-copper components (Annex B).
Additionally, a planimeter method is described (Annex C) and specimen polishing best practices are outlined (Annex D).
-
Uncertainty Analysis
Newly added annexes H and I address uncertainty in the measurement procedures, providing a framework for practitioners to evaluate and improve test precision. -
Wire Types Covered
The standard categorizes Cu/Nb₃Sn wires into four types based on stabilizer layout - external, internal, distributed, and contiguous stabilizer types - with the test method primarily applicable to external and internal stabilizer types.
Applications
-
Superconducting Wire Quality Control
Accurate measurement of copper to non-copper volume ratios is essential for manufacturers to ensure consistency, electrical stability, and performance specifications in Nb₃Sn superconducting wires. -
Research and Development
Researchers developing new superconducting composites or optimizing wire processing benefit from standardized test methods to quantify material composition reliably. -
Critical Current Density Analysis
Since copper content affects current carrying capacity and quench stability, the test method supports performance evaluation vital in applications such as MRI machines, particle accelerators, and fusion reactors. -
Material Certification
Enables suppliers and end-users to validate compliance with electrical and mechanical standards by documenting precise composition ratios.
