IEC 61788-6:2011 covers a test method detailing the tensile test procedures to be carried out on Cu/Nb-Ti superconductive composite wires at room temperature. This test is used to measure modulus of elasticity, 0,2 % proof strength of the composite due to yielding of the copper component, and tensile strength. The value for percentage elongation after fracture and the second type of 0,2 % proof strength due to yielding of the Nb-Ti component serves only as a reference. The sample covered by this test procedure has a round or rectangular cross-section with an area of 0,15 mm2 to 2 mm2 and a copper to superconductor volume ratio of 1,0 to 8,0 and without the insulating coating. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2008. It constitutes a technical revision which adds a new Annex C including specific examples of uncertainty estimation related to mechanical tests.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61788-6:2011 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the method for measuring the mechanical properties of Cu/Nb-Ti composite superconductors. This standard focuses on conducting tensile tests at room temperature on superconductive composite wires composed of copper and niobium-titanium (Nb-Ti) alloy. These materials are used primarily in the manufacture of superconducting magnets, which are subjected to complex stresses and electromagnetic forces during operation.
The standard outlines procedures for determining key mechanical parameters such as the modulus of elasticity, the 0.2% proof strength due to copper yielding, and the ultimate tensile strength. It also provides guidance on measuring elongation after fracture and a secondary proof strength related to the Nb-Ti component, although these serve as reference values. IEC 61788-6:2011 applies to specimens with a cross-sectional area between 0.15 mm² and 2 mm² and a copper to superconductor volume ratio ranging from 1.0 to 8.0. This third edition supersedes the 2008 edition and introduces additional uncertainty estimation examples for mechanical test results.
Key Topics
-
Test Scope and Specimen Requirements
Defines the scope for tensile testing Cu/Nb-Ti composite wires without insulating coatings, specifying acceptable dimensions and volume ratios. -
Mechanical Properties Measured
- Modulus of Elasticity: Reflects wire stiffness under tensile load at room temperature.
- 0.2% Proof Strength: Differentiates between yielding of the copper matrix and the Nb-Ti superconductor filaments.
- Tensile Strength: The maximum stress the composite can endure before failure.
- Percentage Elongation After Fracture: Provides strain data post-failure as a reference metric.
-
Testing Procedure and Apparatus
Details specimen preparation, such as straightening and removal of insulation, and the use of precision testing machines and extensometers for accurate strain measurement. Testing speed, gripping methods, and pre-loading protocols ensure consistent and reproducible results. -
Uncertainty Estimation
Annexes, particularly Annex C introduced in this edition, provide examples of how to estimate uncertainties related to mechanical testing, essential for quality assurance and data reliability. -
Test Reporting
Specifies the format and necessary content for reporting test outcomes, including test conditions, specimen descriptions, and measurement results.
Applications
-
Superconducting Magnet Manufacturing
Understanding the mechanical properties of Cu/Nb-Ti composite wires is vital for designing and fabricating superconducting magnets, which operate under intricate mechanical stresses and electromagnetic forces. -
Quality Control in Superconductor Production
Standardized tensile testing ensures the mechanical reliability and structural integrity of superconductive wires during production and prior to their incorporation into devices. -
Research and Development of Composite Superconductors
The detailed mechanical characterization supports material scientists and engineers in optimizing composite wire design for enhanced performance and durability. -
Performance Assessment Under Operational Conditions
Although the testing is performed at room temperature, the results provide foundational data required for predicting in-service behavior of superconductive composites under mechanical strain.
