IEC 61892-1:2015 contains provisions for electrical installations in mobile and fixed offshore units including pipeline, pumping or 'pigging' stations, compressor stations and exposed location single buoy moorings, used in the offshore petroleum industry for drilling, processing and storage purposes. This International Standard applies to all installations, whether permanent, temporary, transportable or hand-held, to AC installations up to and including 35 000 V and DC installations up to and including 1 500 V (AC and DC voltages are nominal values). This standard does not apply either to fixed equipment for medical purposes or to the electrical installations of tankers. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) The general requirement to harmonic distortion has been changed from IEC 61000-2-4 Class 2 to Class 1. b) The voltage tolerance for a DC system has been changed from +-10 % to +10 %, -15 %. c) Annex C (informative) regarding specification of surface treatment and protective painting system has been added.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61892-1:2015 - "Mobile and fixed offshore units - Electrical installations - Part 1: General requirements and conditions" is the IEC international standard that sets general safety, design and environmental requirements for electrical installations on offshore petroleum units. It applies to mobile and fixed offshore units (including pipeline/pumping or “pigging” stations, compressor stations and exposed single buoy moorings) used for drilling, processing and storage. The standard covers AC systems up to 35 000 V and DC systems up to 1 500 V (nominal values). It does not apply to fixed medical equipment or to tankers.
Key topics and technical requirements
IEC 61892-1 defines general requirements and conditions for offshore electrical installations, including:
- Scope and applicability for permanent, temporary, transportable and hand‑held installations.
- Workmanship, materials and substitutions - acceptance criteria for components and alternatives.
- Environmental design parameters - ambient temperature ranges, relative humidity and cold‑climate precautions.
- Power supply system characteristics:
- AC and DC distribution system requirements (AC ≤ 35 kV, DC ≤ 1.5 kV).
- Harmonic distortion requirement updated from IEC 61000-2-4 Class 2 to Class 1.
- DC voltage tolerance changed to +10 %, −15 %.
- Protection and safety - protection from electric shock, insulation, enclosures, degrees of protection (IP code), mechanical protection, vibration and shock precautions.
- Special locations & equipment - requirements for electrical apparatus in explosive gas atmospheres (ref. IEC 60079), cable entries, and location of equipment on units.
- Maintenance and inspection provisions and guidance on galvanic corrosion prevention.
- Annexes - informative annexes such as Degree of Protection (IP), Cold Climate precautions, and new Annex C on specification of surface treatment and protective painting systems (added in this edition).
Practical applications and users
IEC 61892-1 is intended for professionals involved with offshore electrical systems:
- Offshore electrical designers and system engineers
- Platform contractors, installation and maintenance teams
- Asset operators and facilities managers in the petroleum industry
- Classification societies, inspectors and regulatory authorities
- Procurement and QA personnel specifying materials and protective coatings
Typical applications include electrical design and installation for drilling platforms, production and processing units, pipeline and pumping stations, compressor stations and single buoy moorings.
