IEC 62153-4-15:2015(E) specifies the procedures for measuring with triaxial cell the transfer impedance, screening attenuation or the coupling attenuation of connectors, cable assemblies and components, e.g. accessories for analogue and digital transmission systems and equipment for communication networks and cabling (in accordance with the scope of IEC technical committee 46). Measurements can be achieved by applying the device under test direct to the triaxial cell or with the tube in tube method in accordance with IEC 62153-4-7.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62153-4-15:2015 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) addressing test methods for metallic communication cables and related components. This part of the series focuses specifically on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), providing a standardized procedure for the measurement of transfer impedance, screening attenuation, and coupling attenuation using a triaxial cell. These measurements are essential for assessing the shielding effectiveness of connectors, cable assemblies, and components used in both analogue and digital communication networks.
The test method is particularly relevant for components that are critical in reducing electromagnetic interference (EMI), thereby ensuring reliable data transmission and compliance with EMC requirements.
Key Topics
- Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC): The standard outlines procedures to measure the ability of communication cables and their accessories to resist electromagnetic disturbances.
- Transfer Impedance: Assesses how well a cable’s shield prevents external electromagnetic energy from coupling with the cable’s internal conductors.
- Screening Attenuation: Measures a component’s capability to attenuate electromagnetic interference across its shield, indicating its effectiveness in maintaining signal integrity.
- Coupling Attenuation: Specifically applies to balanced cables and assemblies, reflecting both the screening efficiency and the cable’s symmetry.
- Triaxial Cell Method: IEC 62153-4-15 introduces the use of a triaxial cell-often a rectangular metallic housing-to test larger components and assemblies that may not fit traditional cylindrical test setups.
- Tube-in-Tube Method: Where appropriate, this alternative configuration allows testing in accordance with IEC 62153-4-7, offering flexibility for various sample types.
Applications
The testing guidelines of IEC 62153-4-15:2015 are vital across a broad spectrum of communication network infrastructure and cabling systems:
- Quality Assurance: Manufacturers and laboratories use these standardized test methods to certify that cable assemblies, connectors, and related accessories meet EMC performance requirements.
- Network Infrastructure: Ensures the shielding effectiveness of components used in analog and digital communication systems, minimizing data loss and transmission errors.
- Cabling in Sensitive Environments: Ideal for environments where electromagnetic noise can disrupt operations, such as hospitals, data centers, and industrial automation settings.
- Component Design and R&D: Assists engineers in evaluating and improving the EMC performance of new cable designs, connectors, and accessories early in the development phase.
- Compliance and Certification: Supports compliance with regional and international EMC regulations, providing a reliable basis for conformity assessment and market acceptance.
Related Standards
IEC 62153-4-15 is part of a broader series of standards dedicated to the testing and assessment of shielding effectiveness for metallic communication cables:
- IEC 62153-4-3: Methods for measuring surface transfer impedance using the triaxial method.
- IEC 62153-4-4: Screening attenuation measurements for frequencies up to and above 3 GHz.
- IEC 62153-4-7: The tube-in-tube method for transfer and screening attenuation.
- IEC 62153-4-9: Coupling attenuation in screened balanced cables.
- IEC 62153-4-10: Screening effectiveness for feedthroughs and gaskets using a double coaxial method.
