IEC 62841-3-15:2024 is to be used in conjunction with the first edition of IEC 62841-1 (2014). This document supplements or modifies the corresponding clauses in IEC 62841-1:2014, so as to convert it into the IEC Standard: Particular requirements for transportable magnetic drills. Where a particular subclause of IEC 62841-1:2014 is not mentioned in this Part 3-15, that subclause applies as far as relevant. Where this document states "addition", "modification" or "replacement", the relevant text in IEC 62841-1:2014 is to be adapted accordingly. IEC 62841-1:2014, Clause 1 is applicable, except as follows. Addition: This document applies to transportable magnetic drills which can include a liquid system. The content of the corrigendum 1 (2025-02) has been included in this copy.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62841-3-15:2024 is the IEC particular‑requirements standard for transportable magnetic drills, to be used in conjunction with IEC 62841-1:2014 (first edition). It supplements, modifies and - where stated - replaces clauses of IEC 62841-1 so that the general safety requirements for electric motor‑operated hand‑held and transportable tools are adapted specifically for magnetic drills. This edition (including Corrigendum 1) covers transportable magnetic drills, including those that incorporate a liquid system.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard focuses on practical safety and test requirements specific to magnetic drills. Important areas covered include:
- Scope and normative references - relationship to IEC 62841-1 and referenced documents.
- Terms and definitions tailored to transportable magnetic drills.
- Construction and mechanical strength - requirements to withstand typical operational and impact loads.
- Protection against access to live parts, starting and electrical safety - including input/current, leakage current and electric strength tests (see Annexes C and D).
- Temperature and heating limits - permissible surface and winding temperature rises and endurance testing.
- Creepage, clearances and insulation - measurement methods and minimum distances (Annex A).
- Mechanical hazards and guards - measures to protect users from rotating parts and ejected swarf.
- Moisture, corrosion and resistance to rusting - protections for magnetic drills often used on construction sites.
- Battery and power supply provisions - normative Annexes for battery tools and battery packs (Annex K, L).
- Noise and vibration measurement - informative guidance for emissions testing (Annex I).
- Functional safety and control systems - guidance on applying ISO 13849-1 to power-tool safety circuits (informative Annex E).
Applications and who should use this standard
IEC 62841-3-15:2024 is intended for:
- Manufacturers and product designers of transportable magnetic drills seeking to design to internationally harmonized safety requirements.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies performing type testing, routine tests and certification.
- Safety engineers and compliance officers responsible for CE marking, market access and vendor compliance.
- Regulators and procurement teams specifying safe equipment for construction, metal fabrication and site drilling tasks.
Using this standard helps reduce electrical, mechanical and thermal hazards, supports conformity assessment, and improves product safety and market acceptance.
