IEC 62841-3-9:2014 applies to transportable mitre saws intended to be used with a toothed saw blade for cutting wood and analogous materials, plastics and nonferrous metals except magnesium with a saw blade diameter not exceeding 360 mm, which hereinafter might simply be referred to as saw or tool. This standard does not apply to mitre saws intended to cut other metals, such as magnesium, steel and iron. This standard does not apply to mitre saws with an automatic feeding device. This standard does not apply to saws designed for use with abrasive wheels. This standard does not apply to tools combining the function of a mitre saw with the function of a table saw. The attention of National Committees is drawn to the fact that equipment manufacturers and testing organizations may need a transitional period following publication of a new, amended or revised IEC publication in which to make products in accordance with the new requirements and to equip themselves for conducting new or revised tests. It is the recommendation of the committee that the content of this publication be adopted for implementation nationally not earlier than 36 months from the date of publication. Key words: Mitre saw, Saw, Saw unit, This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 62841-1:2014. The contents of the corrigendum of October 2015 and August 2016 have been included in this copy.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62841-3-9:2014 is an international safety standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that focuses specifically on transportable mitre saws. This standard is part 3-9 of the IEC 62841 series, which covers electric motor-operated hand-held tools, transportable tools, and lawn and garden machinery. The document supplements and modifies the general safety requirements in IEC 62841-1:2014, providing particular requirements to ensure the safe operation and design of transportable mitre saws.
The scope of IEC 62841-3-9:2014 applies to transportable mitre saws designed for cutting materials such as wood, plastics, and nonferrous metals (except magnesium). The saw blades must not exceed 360 mm in diameter. This standard excludes mitre saws intended for cutting steel, iron, magnesium, or abrasive wheels, as well as those equipped with automatic feeding devices or combining other functions like table saws.
Key Topics
- Safety Requirements: Detailed criteria to address mechanical hazards, electrical safety, overheating risks, and user protection.
- Testing Conditions: Methods for endurance, abnormal operation, moisture resistance, and heat/fire safety checks.
- Markings and Instructions: Guidelines on appropriate labeling to inform users of operational risks and safe handling.
- Mechanical Design: Construction requirements including component integrity, saw blade guards, workpiece supports, and stable positioning of saw parts.
- Electrical Measures: Protection against access to live parts, overload protection, insulation distances, and earthing provisions.
- Noise and Vibration Emissions: Informative annexes cover standardized methods for measuring noise and vibration produced by mitre saws.
- Battery-Powered Tools: Normative annexes define requirements for battery tools and associated packs used with these saws.
- Transition Period: The IEC recommends national committees adopt this standard no earlier than 36 months post-publication, allowing manufacturers and testing bodies adequate time for compliance transition.
Applications
This standard is essential for several stakeholders involved in the manufacturing, testing, and use of transportable mitre saws, including:
- Manufacturers: Designing mitre saws that comply with international safety norms to ensure market access and reduce user risks.
- Quality Assurance Teams: Implementing testing protocols in line with IEC 62841-3-9 for performance verification and certification.
- Safety Inspectors and Regulators: Enforcing compliance in industrial and commercial environments to minimize accidents.
- End-users and Professionals: Understanding safety features and operational guidelines that contribute to safer handling and usage.
- Importers and Distributors: Verifying conformity documentation and ensuring products meet the safety expectations for international markets.
By adhering to IEC 62841-3-9:2014, organizations can improve the safety, reliability, and durability of transportable mitre saws, thereby enhancing workplace protection and consumer confidence.
Related Standards
To fully understand safety protocols for transportable mitre saws, IEC 62841-3-9:2014 should be read together with:
- IEC 62841-1:2014: General requirements for electric motor-operated hand-held tools and transportable tools, forming the foundation for Part 3-9.
- Other parts of IEC 62841 series addressing different tool types for comprehensive safety regulation.
- Standards on Electrical Safety: For broader electrical and electrotechnical safety considerations relevant in tool manufacturing.
- Noise and Vibration Measurement Standards: Complementary documentation providing test methodologies and performance levels.
These related standards form a coherent framework for manufacturers and users to ensure that transportable mitre saws meet internationally accepted safety and performance benchmarks.
