IEC 63522-17:2024 is used for testing electromechanical elementary relays (electromechanical relays, reed relays, reed contacts, reed switches and technology combination of these) and for evaluating their ability to perform under expected conditions of transportation, storage and all aspects of operational use. This document defines a standard test method to simulate the mechanical stress on relays as it can occur in service, during handling or during transportation. This document comprises test procedures to simulate shock impacts, steady acceleration environments (such as moving vehicles, aircraft and projectiles) as well as vibration conditions.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 63522-17:2024 is an international standard issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies test methods for assessing the mechanical robustness of electromechanical elementary relays. This includes electromechanical relays, reed relays, reed contacts, reed switches, and combined technologies. The standard focuses on evaluating relay performance under mechanical stress conditions encountered during transportation, storage, handling, and operational use.
The standard defines procedures to simulate mechanical shock, steady acceleration, and vibration that relays may experience in real-world environments such as automotive, aerospace, industrial machinery, and transport sectors. Its application ensures that relays maintain structural integrity and functional reliability despite these mechanical stresses.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Purpose
IEC 63522-17:2024 addresses the testing of relays without packaging, although packaging may be included if essential to the device under test (DUT). The goal is to evaluate structural robustness and functional endurance against mechanical shocks, continuous accelerations, and vibration stresses. -
Test Procedures
The standard defines three primary mechanical stress tests:- Shock Testing: Simulates impacts such as drops or handling shocks that can occur during transportation or infrequent in-service events. This test exposes relays to wide-band frequency excitation to assess structural damage susceptibility.
- Acceleration Testing: Simulates steady acceleration forces experienced by relays in aircraft, vehicles, or rotating machinery to evaluate permanent mechanical stress effects on the relay’s internal components.
- Vibration Testing: Applies sinusoidal vibrations across frequency ranges relevant to automotive, industrial, or offshore applications, identifying resonant frequencies and assessing the durability of mechanical connections within the relay.
-
Test Conditions and Evaluation
Detailed methods outline test conditions including axes orientation, duration, frequency, and intensity of applied shock, acceleration, and vibration forces. Post-test evaluations focus on changes in mechanical properties, performance parameters, and potential damage to relay components. -
Supporting References
The standard references several IEC environmental testing standards (e.g., IEC 60068 series) to align vibration, shock, and acceleration tests with recognized industry procedures.
Applications
-
Transportation and Storage Resilience
IEC 63522-17 testing ensures that relays can withstand mechanical stresses typical of packaging, logistics handling, and in-transit vibrations without compromising functionality. -
Automotive and Aerospace Sectors
Relays used in vehicles, aircraft, and drones are subjected to shocks, acceleration forces, and vibrations throughout their operational life. This standard provides a framework to verify relay durability under these dynamic conditions. -
Industrial and Offshore Installations
Machinery and offshore equipment are exposed to continuous vibrations and mechanical shocks. Applying this standard helps confirm the structural reliability of relays used in these demanding environments. -
Quality Assurance and Product Development
Manufacturers use IEC 63522-17 for design validation, quality control, and grouping relays by their mechanical stress resistance, enabling improved reliability and compliance with international requirements.
