This document defines the calculation of the modified reference rating life taking into consideration lubrication, contamination, and fatigue load limit of the bearing material, as well as tilting or misalignment, operating clearance of the bearing and internal load distribution on rolling elements. The calculation method provided in this document covers influencing parameters additional to those described in ISO 281. The general directions and limitations given in ISO 281 apply to this document. The calculation methods pertain to the fatigue life of the bearings. Other mechanisms of failure, like wear or microspalling (gray-staining), lie outside the scope of this document. This document applies to single- and multi-row radial and thrust ball bearings, subjected to radial and axial load and with radial clearance and tilt taken into account. It also applies to single- and multi-row radial and thrust roller bearings, subjected to radial and axial load and with radial clearance, edge stress and tilt taken into account. References to methods for the analysis of the internal load distribution under general load are given. The calculation of load distribution and basic reference rating life is also applicable to hybrid bearings, using the dynamic load ratings per ISO 20056-1[2]. The calculation of the modified reference rating life is not applicable to hybrid bearings.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16281:2025 - Rolling bearings - Methods for calculating the modified reference rating life for universally loaded rolling bearings - provides an advanced, manufacturer‑neutral method to calculate the modified reference rating life of rolling bearings under realistic operating conditions. The standard extends the life‑calculation framework in ISO 281 by including additional influences such as lubrication, contamination, fatigue load limit of bearing material, tilt or misalignment, operating clearance, and internal load distribution on rolling elements. It addresses fatigue life only; other failure modes (wear, microspalling/gray‑staining) are outside its scope.
Key technical topics and requirements
- Scope: Applies to single‑ and multi‑row radial and thrust ball and roller bearings under combined radial and axial loads, with radial clearance and tilt considered. Roller bearings include edge stress effects.
- Life calculation: Defines procedures to compute the modified reference rating life (90 % reliability or other reliabilities), incorporating:
- Lubrication and contamination factors
- Fatigue load limit of bearing material
- Effects of tilting/misalignment and operating clearance
- Internal load distribution among rolling elements
- Load distribution and rating life: Provides methods and references for analyzing internal load distribution under general loading, including lamina‑based treatment for roller bearings.
- Limits and exclusions: Calculation methods pertain solely to fatigue life; modified life calculation is not applicable to hybrid bearings (though load distribution and basic reference rating life are applicable using ISO 20056‑1 dynamic load ratings).
- Informative annexes: Include procedures and reference data for internal load distribution, reference geometries, edge stress treatment, life modification/contamination factors, Hertzian contact parameters, and handling discontinuities in results.
Practical applications - who should use it
- Bearing designers and manufacturers for advanced life‑prediction under complex loading.
- Mechanical and reliability engineers evaluating bearing selection for shafts, gearboxes, and rotating machinery.
- Simulation and CAE software developers implementing standardized life‑calculation routines.
- Asset‑management and maintenance teams forecasting bearing fatigue life in contaminated or misaligned service conditions.
- Certification and testing bodies (for example, wind turbine gearbox certification per IEC references) seeking a neutral, repeatable basis for comparative life assessments.
