This document specifies three different methods of electro-deposition coating material contamination with liquid, paste-like and solid foreign materials. It is applicable to electro-deposition coatings for automotive industries and other general industrial applications, e.g. chiller units, consumer products, radiators, aerospace, agriculture.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 22553-4:2019 - Paints and varnishes - Electro-deposition coatings - Part 4 specifies standardized test methods to assess the compatibility of electro-deposition (e-coat) coating materials with liquid, paste-like and solid foreign materials. The standard defines three contamination test methods (Methods A, B and C), required apparatus and reagents, and evaluation procedures to detect surface defects and coating performance changes caused by downstream production contaminants. It applies to automotive and general industrial applications (chiller units, consumer products, radiators, aerospace, agriculture).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and principles
- Three contamination scenarios: direct tank contamination (Method A), contact contamination on panels (Method B), and contamination during stoving (Method C).
- Visual evaluation of coated test panels for surface defects following contamination and curing.
- Apparatus and materials
- Laboratory deposition system with tank recirculation and DC voltage equipment, 5 L container, film-thickness gauge (max error 0.1 µm), temperature-controlled oven (±2 °C up to 150 °C), pipette (1 µl accuracy).
- Reagents and foreign materials
- Butyl glycol (technical purity) is specified as a reagent. Contracting parties agree on the foreign material(s) to be used (oils, adhesives, insulating materials, plastics, etc.).
- Method details (illustrative, as specified)
- Method A (Direct contamination): e.g., prepare a 10:90 mix of foreign material:butyl glycol, add 2.5 ml of that mix to 5 L of e-coat and homogenize; immerse and coat panels after 24 h stirring at ~28 ± 3 °C.
- Method B (Contact contamination): apply solid contaminant to panel then immerse and coat.
- Method C (Contamination during stoving): place a coated test panel over a base panel bearing paste-like or solid foreign material at specified distance, then stove and evaluate.
- Test protocol controls
- Blank (control) tests, single determination (replicates can bias results by thinning contamination), specified panel dimensions and pretreatment (ISO 1514), and precision/reporting requirements.
Applications and users
- Practical for quality control, R&D and process validation in:
- Automotive e-coat lines (body-in-white corrosion protection)
- Industrial coating operations (radiators, chiller units, consumer goods, aerospace, agriculture)
- Typical users: paint formulators, coating process engineers, quality assurance laboratories, OEMs and suppliers validating contamination resistance and process robustness.
Related standards
- ISO 22553 series (see ISO 22553-1 for vocabulary)
- ISO 1514 (standard test panels), ISO 2808 (film thickness), ISO 4618 (terms/definitions), ISO 23321 (demineralized water for industrial use)
