This document specifies a method for determining the water absorptiveness of paper and board, including corrugated fibreboard, under standard conditions. This document is not applicable for paper of grammage less than 50 g/m2 or embossed paper. It is not applicable for porous papers such as newsprint or papers such as blotting paper or other papers having a relatively high-water absorptiveness for which ISO 8787 is more suitable.

Test area and apparatus: Standard test area normally 100 cm² (cylinder internal diameter 112.8 mm ± 0.2 mm). A 10 mm water head is used.
Water and reagents: Distilled or deionized water at conditioning temperature - 23 °C ± 1 °C (or 27 °C ± 1 °C in tropical countries) meeting ISO 14487.
Blotting paper: Grammage 250 g/m² ± 25 g/m²; dimensions at least 140 × 140 mm. ISO 5269‑1 compliant papers are suitable.
Apparatus specifics: Metal roller (smooth face) 200 mm ± 10 mm wide, diameter 90 mm ± 10 mm, mass 10 kg ± 0.5 kg; balance readable to 1 mg; timer and graduated measuring device.
Procedure essentials:
- Condition samples per ISO 187 and sample according to ISO 186.
- Cut at least five test pieces per face; avoid printed areas when possible.
- Pour 100 ml ± 5 ml water (or scaled amount for smaller areas), start timer, remove excess water and blot at specified times (see ISO 535 Table 1 for time selections).
- Weigh immediately after blotting to minimise evaporation loss.
Test integrity: Check for penetration or leakage outside test ring; use gasket if necessary; use consistent conditions and equipment settings for comparability.
Reporting & precision: The standard includes requirements for expression of results, precision data and test reporting.
