ISO 8566-1:2010 specifies the general requirements for cabins and control stations from which cranes are operated, and takes the conditions of use of the cabin into consideration.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8566-1:2010 - "Cranes - Cabins and control stations - Part 1: General" sets out the general requirements for crane cabins and control stations from which suspended-load lifting appliances are operated. The standard addresses cabin design, operator workspace, visibility, access, safety features, environmental controls and conditions of use to ensure safe, ergonomic and maintainable operator environments for cranes.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & definitions: Applies to cabins and control stations for lifting appliances as defined in ISO 4306-1; defines terms such as cabin, control device and operator station.
- Operator visibility & ergonomics: Cabins must permit the operator to monitor load movements; dimensions and seat positioning must follow appropriate international ergonomics standards.
- Operator station dimensions and capacity: Standing height minimum of 2 m where no seat provided. Elevating stations must have a nominal capacity covering at least 120 kg (operator plus personal equipment) and tools - nominal minimum 150 kg.
- Seats & controls: Operator seat must be adjustable per ISO 11112; control layout and characteristics to conform with ISO 7752-1.
- Glazing & windows: Floor glazing must be load-supporting or protected by a grille; vertical glass must resist 1.25 kN over 500 mm or be guarded (specified bar spacing). Glass should be tempered and/or laminated.
- Access & escape: Door opening minima (0.6 m × 1.9 m), manhole sizes specified (e.g., 0.6 m × 0.6 m or Ø0.6 m). Manhole opening force ≤135 N; emergency escape routes required where normal exit can be blocked.
- Fire safety: Interior materials and floor must be fire‑resistant; combustion speed (ISO 3795) ≤150 mm/min. Provision and space for a suitable fire extinguisher required.
- Noise & acoustics: Cabins must minimize noise at the operator position; sound level measurement per ISO 11201 (Class 2). Recommended operator noise level not to exceed 85 dB(A).
- Electrical & services: Electrical protection per IEC/CEI 60204-32; separation and protection of electrical and hydraulic lines.
- Environmental comfort: Ventilation, heating and air conditioning to be agreed between user and supplier; ventilation must prevent drafts with doors/windows closed.
Applications and users
ISO 8566-1:2010 is used by:
- Crane manufacturers and designers (tower, mobile, jib, overhead)
- Safety and ergonomic engineers specifying operator environments
- Procurement teams and project engineers writing technical specifications
- Inspection bodies and certification authorities evaluating cabin compliance
- Maintenance teams planning retrofits and upgrades (glazing, HVAC, noise control)
Benefits include improved operator safety, regulatory compliance, better visibility and ergonomics, reduced noise exposure, and clearer procurement specifications.
