ISO 9533:2010 specifies a static test method for determining the sound output performance and alarm activation requirements of audible travel alarms and forward horns mounted on earth-moving machinery, as defined in ISO 6165, for operation on work sites and travelling on public roads. It offers objective test methodologies and performance criteria. It is applicable only to those alarms and horns that are installed on the earth-moving machinery. It does not specify the installation of one or more audible travel alarms or forward horns on particular machines. It addresses neither the laboratory testing of warning alarm functionality nor durability.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 9533:2010 - "Earth-moving machinery - Machine-mounted audible travel alarms and forward horns - Test methods and performance criteria" specifies a static test method to determine sound output performance and alarm activation requirements for machine-mounted audible travel alarms and forward horns on earth‑moving machinery (per ISO 6165). The standard defines objective test procedures and performance criteria for field testing (not laboratory functional or durability testing) and applies only to alarms/horns installed on the machine.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and limits
- Applies to machine‑mounted audible travel alarms, travel/reverse warning alarms and forward horns used on work sites and public roads.
- Does not prescribe installation locations or laboratory durability/functional tests.
- Test environment
- Free‑field over a hard reflecting plane (no reflective surfaces within 30 m).
- Ambient (background) noise at least 10 dB lower than measurement of interest.
- Climatic range: −10 °C to +35 °C; wind speeds < 8 m/s.
- Apparatus
- Type‑1 sound level meter per IEC 61672‑1, acoustical calibrator, microphone windscreen, anemometer, engine RPM indicator and thermometer.
- Measurements recommended to be rounded to the nearest whole decibel.
- Machine preparation
- Measurement locations
- Defined measurement points relative to the Machine Reference Box (MRB): rear corners (0.7 m), rear/front centres (7.0 m), sides and operator ear height.
- Sound measured using Fast time weighting for a minimum of 1 minute per location.
- Alarm types and performance
- Distinguishes fixed sound level alarms and self‑adjusting sound level alarms (which adjust output relative to ambient).
- Includes criteria for reverse warning, travel warning and forward horn activation; Annex C offers an optional 1/3 octave band evaluation.
Practical applications and users
- Who uses ISO 9533: equipment manufacturers, test laboratories, safety engineers, compliance officers and fleet managers.
- Typical uses: verifying on‑machine alarm performance before delivery, site safety audits, regulatory compliance checks and equipment acceptance testing.
- Benefits: objective, repeatable field test methods to ensure audible warnings are effective in real worksite conditions.
