IEC 60669-2-4:2024 applies to manually operated general purpose isolating switches with a rated voltage not exceeding 440 V and a rated current not exceeding 125 A, intended for household and similar fixed electrical installations, either indoors or outdoors. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2004. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) revision of the present edition with reference to the published IEC 60669-1:2017 Edition 4 with its amendments and references to clauses and tables; b) introducing the values for isolating switches with ratings from 6 A to 13 A; c) introducing a circuit motor load with a rated current not exceeding 10 A and a power factor not less than 0,6 in the scope; d) modification of Table 1 and Table 5.
Abstract
Overview
SIST EN IEC 60669-2-4:2026 specifies the particular requirements for manually operated, general-purpose isolating switches used in household and similar fixed electrical installations. The standard applies to isolating switches with rated voltages not exceeding 440 V and rated currents up to 125 A, suited for both indoor and outdoor applications. This second edition updates and replaces the previous edition (2004), aligning closely with IEC 60669-1:2017 and introducing new technical criteria for improved performance, safety, and versatility.
Isolating switches compliant with this standard are essential for safely disconnecting electrical circuits or equipment from supply networks during maintenance, installation, or in the event of faults, ensuring protection against accidental energization.
Key Topics
- Scope and Purpose: Covers isolating switches for household and similar installations, ensuring operational safety and reliability up to 440 V and 125 A.
- Updated Ratings: Expanded to include isolating switches rated from 6 A to 13 A, as well as higher currents (80 A, 100 A, 125 A).
- Compatibility: Refers to IEC 60669-1:2017 for general requirements, with additional clauses specific to isolating switches.
- Motor Loads: Now includes requirements for monophase motor load circuits up to 10 A and power factor not less than 0.6.
- Marking and Identification: Enhanced marking requirements ensure clear identification of switch position (ON/OFF), isolating function, and rated conditional short-circuit current.
- Testing and Performance: Detailed requirements for mechanical strength, electrical endurance, insulation, temperature rise, and short-circuit withstand capabilities.
- Installation Flexibility: Suitable for both indoor and outdoor installations; designed for surface and flush mounting.
- Safety Considerations: Focus on protection against electric shock, proper earthing, and mechanical durability.
- Technical Updates: Revised tables for terminal torque values, conductor dimensions, and current ratings.
Applications
Isolating switches that conform to SIST EN IEC 60669-2-4:2026 are widely utilized in:
- Residential Electrical Installations: Main isolation for individual circuits or the entire installation during maintenance or in emergencies.
- Commercial Buildings: Panel boards, distribution boards, and switchgear where frequent manual isolation is necessary.
- Outdoor Electrical Equipment: Garden lighting, HVAC units, pump controls, and other units that require local isolation.
- Small Motor Circuits: Equipment and appliances with motor loads up to 10 A, benefitting from clear isolation and safety guarantees.
- Renovations and Upgrades: Ensures existing installations meet contemporary safety and performance standards through compliant switch replacements.
Proper use of isolating switches in accordance with this standard enhances safety, simplifies servicing, and helps prevent accidental electrical hazards.
