IEC 62841-3-16:2025 applies to transportable belt sanders, disc sanders and belt/disc sanders which are equipped with – a sanding belt; or – a sanding disc; or – a sanding belt and a sanding disc for sanding solid materials. This document does not apply to hand-held disc-type sanders. NOTE 101 Hand-held disc-type sanders are covered by IEC 62841-2-3. This document does not apply to hand-held belt sanders. NOTE 102 Hand-held belt sanders are covered by IEC 62841-2-4. This Part 3-16 is to be used in conjunction with the first edition of IEC 62841-1:2014 and IEC 62841-1:2014/AMD1:2025. This Part 3-16 supplements or modifies the corresponding clauses in IEC 62841-1:2014, so as to convert it into the IEC Standard: Particular requirements for transportable belt sanders, disc sanders and belt/disc sanders. Where a particular subclause of IEC 62841-1:2014 is not mentioned in this Part 3-16, that subclause applies as far as relevant. Where this document states "addition", "modification" or "replacement", the relevant text in IEC 62841-1:2014 is to be adapted accordingly. NOTE The attention of National Committees is drawn to the fact that equipment manufacturers and testing organizations can need a transitional period following publication of a new, amended or revised IEC publication in which to make products in accordance with the new requirements and to equip themselves for conducting new or revised tests. It is the recommendation of the committee that the content of this publication be adopted for implementation nationally not earlier than 36 months from the date of publication.
Abstract
Overview
SIST EN IEC 62841-3-16:2026 sets out the particular safety requirements for transportable belt sanders, disc sanders, and belt/disc sanders operated by electric motors. This European standard applies to electrically powered tools equipped with a sanding belt, sanding disc, or both, designed for sanding solid materials. It specifically excludes hand-held disc-type sanders and hand-held belt sanders, which are covered by other sections of the IEC 62841 series.
As a supplement to IEC 62841-1:2014 and its 2025 amendment, this standard ensures that manufacturers and users of sanding machinery for wood, plastics, metal, and other solid materials can minimize risks associated with their operation. Compliance with SIST EN IEC 62841-3-16:2026 supports worker safety, product reliability, and alignment with international safety frameworks across the construction, manufacturing, and woodworking industries.
Key Topics
- Scope and Applicability: Focuses on transportable (not hand-held) electric sanders with sanding belts, discs, or an integrated combination, used on solid materials in industrial and professional environments.
- Safety Requirements: Outlines protective measures against mechanical hazards, live electrical parts, overheating, dust, and accidental start-up. Highlights specific design features, including:
- Rigid back stops
- Work tables for operator safety
- Markings for direction of rotation
- Maximum clearance limits between moving parts and safety stops, to prevent hand or finger injuries
- Markings and Instructions: Requires indelible safety markings on tools and mandates clear safety and operational instructions for users, such as warnings about personal protective equipment and safe workpiece handling.
- Testing and Performance: Describes methods for verifying mechanical strength, endurance, and compliance with protection levels, including tests for nip-point safety, back stop strength, and work table sturdiness.
- Battery-operated Tools: Provides additional requirements for sanders powered by batteries, ensuring these tools incorporate disabling or isolation devices to prevent accidental start-up during maintenance.
Applications
SIST EN IEC 62841-3-16:2026 is essential for:
- Tool Manufacturers and Designers: Ensuring product designs for belt sanders, disc sanders, or combination units meet the latest safety standards, maximizing market access in Europe and internationally.
- Testing Laboratories/Certification Bodies: Providing a definitive framework for evaluating product compliance and preparing technical documentation for safety certifications.
- Industrial Users and Workshops: Supporting safe installation and operation of powered sanding machinery in professional carpentry, metalworking, fabrication, and maintenance facilities.
- Procurement and Safety Managers: Guiding the selection and purchase of compliant transportable sanding equipment to assure workplace safety.
Adopting this standard reduces workplace accidents and provides clear guidance for the adjustment and maintenance of sanding equipment, enhancing productivity and operator confidence.
Related Standards
- IEC 62841-1:2014 & IEC 62841-1:2014/AMD1:2025: General safety requirements for electric motor-operated tools, forming the foundation for all parts of IEC 62841.
- IEC 62841-2-3: Covers hand-held disc-type sanders and grinders.
- IEC 62841-2-4: Relates to hand-held belt sanders.
- EN IEC 62841-3-16:2026: The European adoption of this IEC standard.
- ISO 7010: Specifies safety symbols, including required markings for eye protection.
Conclusion
SIST EN IEC 62841-3-16:2026 is a key reference in the field of electric transportable sanders, ensuring that safety is central to both tool design and day-to-day operation. By implementing its requirements, organizations can ensure safer workplaces, comply with international safety standards, and achieve higher productivity with reduced risk. For further alignment and safe tool usage, this standard should be considered with the associated IEC and EN standards within the 62841 series.
