IEC 60794-1-306: 2023 describes test procedures to verify the mechanical and functional integrity of the fibre ribbon structure. The test determines the capability of the ribbon to withstand torsion without delamination between optical fibre and ribbon bonding agent. This document applies to optical fibre ribbons in optical cables for use with telecommunication equipment and devices employing similar techniques, and to optical fibre ribbons in cables having a combination of both optical fibres and electrical conductors. This document is not applicable to partially-bonded ribbons. The method for partially-bonded ribbons is under consideration. Throughout the document, the wording "optical cable" can also include optical fibre units, microduct fibre units, etc. NOTE The environmental testing of optical fibre ribbon would be valuable for some applications. Useful information about suitable test methods can be found in the optical fibre standards IEC 60793-1-50, IEC 60793-1-51, IEC 60793‑1‑52, and IEC 60793-1-53. This document partially cancels and replaces IEC 60794‑1‑23:2019. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to IEC 60794‑1‑23:2019: a) change the scope, not include partially-bonded ribbon; b) add some details to the procedure.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60794-1-306:2023 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that addresses optical fibre cables with a focus on basic optical cable test procedures. Specifically, this part-known as Part 1-306-defines the ribbon torsion test method (Method G6) to verify the mechanical and functional integrity of fibre ribbon structures in optical cables. It provides detailed procedures to evaluate the ribbon's ability to withstand torsion without delamination between the optical fibres and the bonding agent.
This standard is critical for manufacturers, designers, and testers of optical fibre ribbons used extensively in telecommunications equipment and devices, as well as in hybrid cables containing both optical fibres and electrical conductors. It excludes testing on partially-bonded ribbons, with a method for those under development.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application
IEC 60794-1-306:2023 applies to optical fibre ribbons within optical cables, including ribbon structures used in telecommunication systems and related technologies. The term "optical cable" is broadly defined, including optical fibre units and microduct fibre units. -
Test Purpose
The ribbon torsion test examines the ribbon's capability to endure twisting loads without mechanical failure due to delamination-a key quality indicator ensuring long-term performance reliability. -
Test Apparatus and Setup
The test involves clamping the ribbon sample vertically and applying incremental twists of 180° in alternating directions under controlled tension. The test apparatus includes two clamps-upper and lower-designed to allow rotation and vertical movement respectively, ensuring precise torsional loading. -
Test Procedure
Samples are twisted smoothly in increments, dwelled for at least 5 seconds at each increment, and cycled until a predefined number of turns or delamination occurs. Typical sample length is at least 120 mm, with minimum test length of 100 mm, but specifics are finalized per customer-supplier agreements. -
Requirements and Specifications
The ribbon must withstand the specified number of 180° twists without delamination to pass the test. Detailed specifications must include:- Number of samples tested
- Length of each sample
- Test length
- Number of twist cycles
- Mass of the lower clamp
-
Exclusions and Notes
This test does not cover partially-bonded ribbons. Additionally, environmental testing (e.g., temperature and humidity effects) on optical fibre ribbons is recommended for some applications, with suitable methods referenced in IEC 60793 standards.
Applications
The IEC 60794-1-306 standard is essential for ensuring high-quality optical fibre ribbons that serve as critical components in:
-
Telecommunication Networks
Proper testing guarantees mechanical stability of fibre ribbons in cables used for high-speed data transmission over long distances. -
Hybrid Cable Systems
Verifying torsion resistance in cables combining optical fibers and electrical conductors enhances durability and reliability in complex infrastructure. -
Cable Manufacturing and Quality Control
Manufacturers utilize the standard to validate product designs and maintain quality benchmarks, minimizing failure risks during installation and operation. -
Research and Development in Fibre Technologies
The procedure supports innovations in ribbon bonding techniques and cable design by providing standardized performance evaluation metrics.
