IEC 60794-3-20:2016 covers optical self-supporting aerial telecommunication cables. Requirements of the sectional specification IEC 60794-3 for duct, buried and aerial cables are applicable to cables covered by this standard. Self-supporting aerial telecommunication cable in this context means a cable construction with sufficient strength members designed to be suspended on poles and similar devices without the aid of another supporting wire or conductor. ADSS cables installed on power lines which require special sheath material for tracking and erosion resistance and other constructions intended for high-voltage applications are not covered by this standard. Detail specifications may be prepared based on this family specification. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2009. It constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - the specification has been streamlined by cross-referencing IEC 60794-1-1, IEC 60794-1-2 and the IEC 60794-3 series; - an annex containing the MICE table has been deleted; - an annex on examples has been added. Keywords: optical self-supporting aerial telecommunication cables
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60794-3-20:2016 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies requirements and test methodologies for optical fibre cables, particularly those used as self-supporting aerial telecommunication cables. This standard is part of the IEC 60794 series, which focuses on outdoor optical fibre cables. The 2016 edition replaces the 2009 version, introducing updated cross-references and technical refinements.
Self-supporting aerial telecommunication cables are designed with built-in strength members, enabling them to be suspended between poles or similar structures without the need for an additional supporting wire. This standard does not cover all-dielectric self-supporting (ADSS) cables intended for high-voltage power lines or those requiring special tracking and erosion resistance sheath materials.
Key Topics
- Applicability: Covers cables suspended in aerial environments, excluding those requiring high-voltage insulation or advanced erosion resistance.
- Reference Framework: Builds on broader specifications in IEC 60794-3 (outdoor cables), referencing essential test procedures, definitions, and specifications in related standards such as IEC 60794-1-1 and IEC 60794-1-2.
- Cable Strength and Support: Details on the construction and strength requirements so cables can self-support without extra wires.
- Testing Requirements: Includes mechanical and environmental tests such as tensile strength, crush resistance, bending, torsion, impact, temperature cycling, water penetration, and aging.
- Customization and Documentation: Provides guidelines for creating detail specifications customized for specific applications, based on the family specification.
- Annexes: Offers examples of cable construction and installation to assist implementers.
- Technical Changes (2016 Edition):
- Streamlined specification with enhanced cross-referencing.
- Removal of the MICE table annex.
- Addition of practical cable construction and installation examples.
Applications
Self-supporting aerial optical fibre cables standardized in IEC 60794-3-20:2016 are critical for:
- Telecommunications Infrastructure: Enabling reliable fibre optic connections for internet, telephone, and data services in urban, suburban, and rural areas where aerial deployment is necessary.
- Broadband Network Expansion: Supporting rapid and cost-effective extension of fibre optic networks across challenging terrains where direct burial or duct installation is not feasible.
- Municipal and Utility Networks: Used in city-wide or campus-scale fibre deployments along public roads, utility corridors, and private properties, especially where poles already exist.
- Rural and Remote Area Connectivity: Providing an effective solution for delivering telecommunication services over long spans with minimal civil works.
- Temporary or Emergency Installations: Ideal for rapid deployment in disaster recovery or temporary event networking scenarios.
Related Standards
To ensure compliance and interoperability in optical fibre cable projects, consider the following related IEC standards:
- IEC 60794-3: Sectional specification for outdoor optical fibre cables, serving as the foundation for the family specification.
- IEC 60794-1-1: Generic specification defining general cable requirements and terminology.
- IEC 60794-1-21: Outlines basic mechanical test procedures for optical fibre cables.
- IEC 60794-1-22: Specifies environmental test methods for optical fibre cables.
- IEC 60811 Series: Provides testing methods for cable materials, such as overall dimensions, electrical properties, and mechanical integrity.
- IEC TR 62691: A technical report with guidelines for the installation of optical fibre cables.
- IEC TR 62839-1: Guidance on environmental declarations for wires, cables, and related products.
Practical Value
Adopting IEC 60794-3-20:2016 helps manufacturers, installers, and telecommunication providers ensure that self-supporting aerial fibre optic cables meet international safety, reliability, and performance standards. By referencing this specification, stakeholders can guarantee:
- Consistent construction quality and mechanical performance across suppliers.
- Robustness and durability for exposure to environmental stresses typical of aerial installations.
- Efficient network deployment and reduced risk of failure or costly maintenance.
- Streamlined project specification and procurement processes with globally recognized criteria.
