ISO 3665:2011 establishes a system for the classification of intra-oral radiographic film by the speed of the film/process system and by the size of the film. It specifies the sensitometric characteristics of the film/process systems, the physical characteristics of the film and packets, and it describes packaging and labelling requirements. ISO 3665:2011 is applicable to intra-oral dental radiographic film for manual or automatic processing. It does not apply to films intended to be exposed with fluorescent intensifying screens, or films intended to be viewed primarily by reflected light.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3665:2011 - Photography - Intra‑oral dental radiographic film and film packets - Manufacturer specifications - defines manufacturer requirements for intra‑oral dental X‑ray film and packets used with manual or automatic processing. The standard establishes a classification system by film/process speed and film size, specifies sensitometric and physical characteristics, and sets packaging, labelling and sampling/testing rules. It excludes films intended for fluorescent intensifying screens or films viewed primarily by reflected light.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Film speed groups: Speed groups are defined per ISO 5799 (notably groups D, E, F with specified ISO speed ranges).
- Film sizes and packet dimensions: Standard size numbers (0–5, including variants 1A, 4A) with exact film dimensions and maximum packet length/width tolerances. Packet max length/width may exceed film by up to 4.0 mm; packet thickness (excluding positioning tab) ≤ 2.0 mm.
- Sensitometric properties:
- Uniform response to radiation.
- Average gradient > 1.50 (per ISO 5799).
- Base plus fog density: ≤ 0.25 at manufacture; manufacturers shall use a maximum of 0.40 to set the expiry date.
- Physical film limits:
- Film thickness ≤ 0.25 mm.
- Film corner step (manufacturing ledge) ≤ 0.2 mm.
- Radiation-side indicator required (embossed dot or equivalent).
- Packet construction and attenuation:
- Packets must provide light‑tight enclosure; lead foil (or equivalent) included where internal X‑ray attenuation is used and positioned away from the radiation source.
- If external attenuation is required, this must be clearly stated with instructions.
- Packet coverings must be visible under recommended safelight illumination and withstand mouth moisture and liquid disinfectants.
- Labelling and instructions:
- Packets and packages must show product name, speed group, number of films, orientation marking and handling/storage instructions (including shipping and expiry handling).
- Sampling, inspection and testing:
Practical applications and users
ISO 3665:2011 is used by:
- Dental film manufacturers - to design, test and label intra‑oral film products and packets compliant with international limits.
- Quality and regulatory teams - to establish manufacturing QC, shelf‑life criteria and audit evidence for conformity.
- Test laboratories - to perform sampling, sensitometric and dimensional testing.
- Dental clinics and procurement - to verify supplier data, storage/handling instructions and ensure clinical compatibility with processing methods. The standard helps ensure diagnostic image quality, safe handling, consistent sizing and reliable labelling across global dental radiography supply chains.
