IEC 61010-2-011:2016 specifies particular safety requirements for the following types a) to c) of electrical equipment and their accessories, wherever they are intended to be used, whenever that equipment incorporates REFRIGERATING SYSTEMS whether an integral part of, or remote to the equipment and the equipment is in direct control of the REFRIGERATING SYSTEM. This Part 2 details all the requirements when up to 150 g of FLAMMABLE REFRIGERANT are used per stage of a REFRIGERATING SYSTEM. Additional requirements beyond the current scope of this standard apply if a refrigerant charge of FLAMMABLE REFRIGERANT exceeds this amount. It has the status of a horizontal standard in accordance with IEC Guide 104. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 61010-1:2010.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61010-2-011:2016 is an international standard from the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that provides specific safety requirements for electrical equipment used for measurement, control, and laboratory applications that incorporate refrigerating systems. This standard is particularly relevant for equipment that contains up to 150 grams of flammable refrigerant per stage. If the quantity of flammable refrigerant exceeds this value, additional safety requirements outside the scope of this standard may apply.
This standard is classified as a group safety publication and should be used alongside IEC 61010-1:2010, the foundational standard for general safety requirements for this category of equipment. It also aligns with IEC Guide 104, which outlines the use of horizontal safety standards.
Key Topics
IEC 61010-2-011:2016 sets out detailed requirements and guidance on:
- Safety of refrigerating equipment within measurement, control, and laboratory environments
- Protection against hazards such as electric shock, mechanical risks, fire, and exposure to released gases or fluids
- Use and marking of flammable refrigerants, with explicit provisions when up to 150g are present per refrigerating stage
- Test procedures for environmental extremes, abnormal operation, and fault conditions
- Marking and documentation requirements, including identification of refrigerant type, allowable pressure, and relevant warnings
- Risk assessment methodologies for operators, maintenance personnel, and bystanders
The standard also introduces new terminology, symbols, and definitions to help ensure compliance and safety in diverse applications.
Applications
IEC 61010-2-011 is essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and safety assessors involved with:
- Laboratory refrigerators and freezers
- Refrigerated display cabinets
- Measurement and control equipment with integrated or remote refrigeration
- Environmental test chambers using refrigerating systems
The guidelines ensure that both new designs and existing products meet essential health and safety requirements. Compliance helps:
- Safeguard operators and maintenance staff from hazards like electric shock, mechanical injury, or exposure to flammable substances
- Support conformity assessment for local and international market access
- Guide product development, ensuring that refrigeration systems are integrated safely within laboratory or industrial settings
Implementing these requirements also facilitates smoother certification processes and reduces liability for manufacturers and users.
Related Standards
For organizations seeking a comprehensive safety approach or dealing with hybrid systems, the following related standards should also be considered:
- IEC 61010-1:2010: General safety requirements for electrical equipment for measurement, control, and laboratory use (must be used in conjunction)
- IEC 61010-2-010: Requirements for equipment with heating systems
- IEC 61010-2-012: Requirements for equipment combining heating and refrigeration, where interactions may increase hazard
- IEC 60335-2-34: Safety for motor-compressors
- IEC 60079-15: Equipment protection for explosive atmospheres (relevant for flammable refrigerants)
- ISO 817 and ISO 5149-1: Classification and safety data for refrigerants
Practical Value
Adopting IEC 61010-2-011 facilitates:
- Safe design and operation of equipment using flammable or high-pressure refrigerants
- Consistent global compliance for product safety approvals
- Reduced workplace accidents and improved hazard management
- Clear guidance for engineers, designers, and safety managers in laboratories, research facilities, and industrial control environments
For safety compliance in laboratory and control equipment with refrigeration, this standard is a critical foundation.
